Product Discovery Frameworks That Actually Work
Most teams skip discovery or do it wrong. Here’s a practical framework that combines customer interviews, data analysis, and rapid prototyping.
The Problem with Traditional Discovery
Traditional product discovery often feels like theater. Teams go through the motions of customer interviews and market research, but the insights rarely translate into meaningful product decisions.
A Better Framework
Here’s what actually works:
1. Start with the Problem Space
Don’t jump to solutions. Spend time understanding the problem deeply through:
- Customer interviews (at least 10-15)
- Data analysis of existing behavior
- Competitive analysis
2. Define Success Metrics
Before building anything, define:
- What success looks like
- How you’ll measure it
- What the decision criteria is
3. Rapid Prototyping
Build the minimum version to test your hypothesis. This could be:
- A Figma prototype
- A landing page
- A manual process
Conclusion
Discovery isn’t a phase — it’s a mindset. The best PMs are always in discovery mode.
